01. Project Scope

The project required:

  • Design, build and operation of eBus charging infrastructure including origination and specification of new UKPN power connection, followed by project management and liaison with UKPN for new connection works.

  • Design and execution of all electrical and civils works for the installation of substations, feeder pillars and associated HV and LV equipment.

  • Installation of 18x BYD 80 kW chargers in the garage and a single ABB 300kW Pantograph charger with power pack.

  • Commissioning and connecting of charge points to the charge point management system (CPMS) and back office through EO software and Cloud, software access and on-site training for Go-Ahead London colleagues.

02. Project Summary

EO's role in the project:

EO provided full turnkey consultancy in the following key areas:

  • Power requirements

  • Infrastructure installation (including charger and pantograph layout)

  • Plus, supported Go-Ahead London & partners with the planning & location of infrastructure

Once design and mobilisation were complete, lead contractor EO continued to work closely with Go-Ahead London and the local Council to deliver the project.

This was aligned to Council approvals and permissions, power connections, civils and electrical works. The project was accomplished through close collaboration with all stakeholders

Individual elements installed (Hardware / Software):

Installation of 18 80kW dual gun BYD chargers, and a 300kW pantograph charger installed on the garage forecourt for daytime opportunity charging. Plus, EO’s software and CPMS, and a 2mVa substation as part of the power upgrade.

Services provided (Maintenance / Aftercare):

EO provides 24/7/365 operations and maintenance support for the site.

03. Key Activities Undertaken By EO

  • Full project management responsibilities for the installation programme [EO engineering delivery and and onsite management team]

  • Principle point of contact and liaison with the Go- Ahead London project team [EO Key Account Manager.

  • All works and management of the charger commissioning process.

This was a particularly complex project to manage as it involved liaison between Go Ahead London, and the local council due to the road closures, traffic management and access considerations.

04. Key Challenges & Learnings

A programme of works and permissions were required to connect the new power supply’s point of connection [outside of the garage and on a public highway] to the garage – requiring an on-street 200+ metre dig along a major hub entry point to Bexley town centre.

Collaborative discussions and stakeholder meetings were held in early 2022 to agree the design and works programme for excavating roads outside of the garage [to allow for a new main cable to be brought to site to connect the main power to the new substation and transformer]. Following these meetings, civils, electrical and UKPN connection works were coordinated with the council for street work permits.

Once the connection works were complete, the BYD chargers and the ABB pantograph were installed, as well as the new substation/transformer and switch panel with the main cable taken to the site boundary.
